According to the head of Airports Corporation of Vietnam, Danang airport served up to 5 million passengers in 2014, seeing an increase of 16 percent over the previous year. With a 15-percent annual growth rate in the number of passengers, the existing terminal would be overloaded so soon as it was designed to work for the maximum capacity of 6 million passengers per year.
Speaking about the new construction, the Minister of Transport, Mr. Dinh La Thang supposed that it is really essential to building the new terminal in Danang International Airport in order to well meet the rapidly increasing number of both domestic and foreign passengers to Danang, particularly since the opening of more and more air routes to this dynamic city.
Danang’s new international passenger terminal will cover an area of 2.1 hectares, located right next to the existing terminal and sharing with it the similar design. The construction will be completed by March 2017, before the open of 25th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC), which’s going to take place in Danang City in the year of 2017. When coming into use, it is expected to serve 2.3 million passengers on international flights to Danang by 2022 and 4 million passengers by 2030, meeting the need of serving 1,600 passengers during peak hours.
Most recently, together with Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport, Danang International Airport has been cited among 30 best airports in Asia in 2015 by The Guide to Sleeping in Airports.
